Greenwood Lake provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The village has an abundance of recreational activities for adults and children, such as boating, water skiing, fishing and hiking.

Located at the north end of a lake approximately 5 miles long, Greenwood Lake bestrides the New York and New Jersey border. The village is comprised of a half-mile commercial strip and small neighborhoods, some with homeowners associations and their own private beaches.

The village was founded in 1856 when Solomon Caldwell purchased the land and divided it up for sale as "hotels, villa sites and town lots." Subsequent plot plans suggested renaming the community the "Town of Avington" in 1884, and "Montelac Park" in 1890, but it remained Greenwood Lake, becoming incorporated as a village in 1924.

A one-hour commute to New York City by car, Greenwood Lake has public water access, public beaches and the ever-famous lake. Sterling Forest State Park, nearby snow boarding and snowmobiling, kayaking, canoeing and golfing are some of the main attractions that continue to draw tourists and locals to Greenwood Lake year-round.

Two public schools are located in Greenwood Lake, a middle and elementary school. Shopping facilities are close by, including the Woodbury Commons outlet mall 14 miles northeast.

Greenwood Lake is one of the Hudson Valley’s best-kept secrets. Its beautiful surroundings, tranquility and convenient location make it great for a weekend retreat or place of permanent residence.
